I hear Angela's party will have double fudge brownies. But it will also have Angela.

Okay, the food situation for OfficeCon: Please eat early lunches before you come and bring money for pizza. We have PLENTY of leftover Christmas cookies and would be more than happy for you to eat those to your hearts' content. We are not so much up on other snacks, so if there's something you absolutely must have, I'd suggest bringing it.

Again, come around 11:30 so we can start at noon. Wednesday.

Thank you and, again, Merry Christmas and Happy Hogswatch!

So when you hook the hose up to your tailpipe, don't expect to wake up and get toast for breakfast. The toast is you.

White Christmas?

I'm only going to say this once. It's CHRISTMAS EVE, people. It should be SNOWING! Damn global warming.

Ok, that is all. You may now return to your festivities.

So when you hook the hose up to your tailpipe, don't expect to wake up and get toast for breakfast. The toast is you.

I shall kill the President... Thereby becoming the President...

Great job, Michael and Erin, keep it coming. I am quite amused. I've been reading the months they reviewed, makes me miss going to school with Michael. Ironic that I'm currently working on lightsabers again. Jonah, you might not get yours, because I can't find the blade holder. Nathan's will certainly be done by Christmas. Should I withhold it until I can finish jonah's? If the part for it is still at school, then it will be spring before I can finish it since I don't have the resources at school to drill and tap holes for screws.
My first day of work at Arby's was yesterday, there's only so much worth saying about that. I was oriented. They showed me videos. Hurray for employee conditioning and subliminal control. Being underemployed is vaguely amusing. If I weren't leaving in three weeks, I'd take my dayshift manager's job.
I want Christmas!

So when you hook the hose up to your tailpipe, don't expect to wake up and get toast for breakfast. The toast is you.

"Meredith, if you don't come to my party, you will be very, very sorry." "Is that a threat?" "No, it's an invitation!"

DETAILS OF OFFICECON!

What: We're watching The Office all day!

When: Wednesday, December 27, 11:30. I want to get started by noon.

Where: Casa Erin.

Food?: Please bring money for pizza. We'll have snacks, or at least lots of leftover Christmas cookies, but I'd suggest maybe eating an early lunch before you come. Honestly, we're having twenty-two guests over here tomorrow, and it is not the time to bug my mom about anything that comes after that. Maybe I will do another post about food when it is safe to bring it up.

Does that work?

MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERYBODY!

So when you hook the hose up to your tailpipe, don't expect to wake up and get toast for breakfast. The toast is you.

12 December 2006

When I'm walking, I worry a lot about the efficiency of my path.

I have become an agent of procrastination. With nothing important to do, I set out on a quest to prevent others from getting work done. I found Jonah a willing soul, and we went to buy food at drug-mart. We had a time limit, because drug-mart would close in ten minutes. We also had a number of items to collect in this time limit before we could accomplish our goal, such as shoes and wallets. There was also the weather to worry about, which was vaguely wet. Jonah went commando wearing lounge pants, so he lost 3 hit points every minute he spent outside. We made our way to drug-mart in a most silly fashion, a strange sort of gait not disimilar to that of old 16-bit Nintendo characters.
Upon our arrival, a snack was quickly settled upon: cookies and milk. The ultimate question, however, was do we go for double stuff oreos, or original oreos? "Well," said Jonah, "the double stuff will quite obviously have more cream filling."
"Ah," I replied, "but with all the cream filling, there is not as much room in the bag for cookies." We examined the back labels of each sort of cookie; the double-stuff having 18 servings of 2 cookies and the original having 15 servings of 3 cookies. I was correct in my hypothesis, and we opted for the 45 original oreos rather than the 36 double-stuff. "Of course, 36 would be easier to split between two people," I reasoned. Jonah provided the the possibility that others in the house might grab a cookie or two, a variable I had not counted upon.
We returned home, satisfied with out procrastinatory purchase. Several cookies in, Jonah brought up a possible mistake. "Wait, if there is twice as much cream filling in a double-stuff oreo, and only three fourths as many cookies in a double-stuff package, wouldn't we have achieved a greater net enjoyment from double-stuff oreos?"
"Double-stuffing does not necessarily translate into double enjoyment. I would say one double-stuffed oreo is only 25% more enjoyable than one normal oreo. That means 4 double-stuff oreos are worth 5 normal oreos, so we're still getting the better deal when it comes to quantity of cookies in relation to how much we enjoy the entire bag."
"I'd say the double-stuffed oreos are at least 50% more enjoyable than normal ones."
"Well, that would make an entire bag of double-stuff oreos 25% more enjoyable to you, but there are too many opinion-based variables to consider, such as how much milk is consumed with each cookie, whether or not you eat the cream filling before you dunk, and so one. This leaves the quantity of cookies as the primary decision maker."
Jonah nodded, and we got on with less mathematically complicated methods of procrastination, such as blogging this entire debacle.

OFFICECON!

I would like to propose a Con to watch The Office. Because it is going to be a gimmick in the end of the year post, and also, it is an awesome show and I think you all would really like it.

The propsed date is the 28th, but if that doesn't work please submit the dates that will or, perhaps, all the dates you know of that won't so that we can pick a date that will.

Location: I'm thinking my house

Now, here is the part where your vote counts. There are two seasons of The Office. The first season is six episodes long, and the second season is 22 episodes long. By Michael's calculation, watching all of these episodes would take about 10 hours and 15 minutes. Watching only the second season would take 8 hours and fifteen minutes, but some amount of character development would be lost, plus the Alliance episode, which is one of my favorites, and also, I might get a little twitchy because watching a second season without a first season does that to me. But, you know, I'd get over it.

You guys are troopers. You've done OscarCon and StarWarsRelatedChicaneryCon. I believe you could do this if you want to. But the worst thing that could happen would be if you lost interest or had to go before Casino Night, the second season finale. Because that is one of the best episodes in the history of television. So, let me know what you feel you can do. Vote.

It has also been proposed that we cut out a couple of the first season episodes or that we pick it up another time if necessary. Just let me know what you feel you are capable of.

You will not regret attending this con. After all, "Ain't no party like a Scranton party."

Things I should have mentioned some time ago, part the first

So I'm not as pissed off as Jonah, but I was slightly annoyed about this whole blogger thing, because I, too had an interesting post to make and I, too, was prevented from doing it because I was too lazy to set up a google account at the time. Therefore I, too, will post it now.
Adam is gone. He has been gone fully a week now. I can't say I miss him all that much. I have enjoyed sleeping at night without him waking me up. I have enjoyed being able to work in my room in the daytime without fear of waking him up. In fact, in the week since Adam's departure, my room has suddenly become the Annex party room. I walk in and find people just hanging out there. This is not really a bad thing yet, although it may get annoying soon.
What's happened since break is that the Annex finally feels like home. And not just in the sense of a place to live, but in the sense of a place where you feel loved and welcomed by the other people there. Not all of them, obviously, but enough that I really feel like I'm a part of this place. And not just because my room is huge and my new roommate has an SNES. (WHich is actually a step up from the Annex's usual form of entertainment, NES. I'm getting to be quite good at Super Mario Bros. 3.)
My new roommate is Chalkey. It's very difficult to describe Chalkey in one post, but suffice it to say he's a five foot three Korean-Japanese American and half the Annex thinks he and I are actually gay together. Upon discovering that, we decided to let them keep thinking it. We also now have our own personal Ogre. His name is Jered. He's enormous, but not in a bad way. We control him by means of the Super Nintendo and force him to do our bidding. For christmas, we bought him a cocktail fork. He was confused.
So in short, life in the Annex is good. Life outside the Annex, maybe not so much. But I'll get to that part a little later. That's why this is part the first.

Thog wonders how Thog will cope with life outside jailhouse walls

I realized another reason I changed it: Blogger would probably make me do it eventually anyway. I wrote an essay about this, actually, how upgrades can drive you crazy, but you kinda have to go with them eventually, anyway. It's part of the singularity. Anyway, it turns out there's some pretty cool stuff with this beta thing.

I think we're all going through some pretty nutty shit, and next week will be most welcome. You see, Jonah, you reached that point when everyone knew you and watched you change from one person to another. People here don't know the dynamics or history behind you. No one knows your origin story. Trust me, I've had the same problem. I'm not the wacky yet lovable character with a lot of people here, I'm a novelty that got old after a month. When you have your ego here, it's not seen as adorable by everyone because no one knows you well enough to not care how conceited you act. Almost no one here knows my normal side, and I'm going to have a hard time introducing it to people.

I miss everyone, and I'm killing this week with every last ounce of strength.

I suggest we all begin talking in Istep memory code, there's a dictionary on facebook.

Foxes

What the hell ever happened to democracy, Michael Christie?
This blog belongs to all of us, and I, for one, think that all of us should have been consulted about moving it to the new blogger which, by the way, I hate. On principle.
I hate that everything upgrades, and it gets "better" but better just means more complicated and scarier, and they say you don't have to upgrade, but then thye get you on some feature. Yeah, you don't have to get the new iTunes, but we'll be damned if we'll let you share songs with people who have it. Yeah, you don't have to show up on the news feed, but if you don't everyone will forget about you and no one will ever visit your profile. Yeah, you don't have to switch to the new Blogger, but you do if you want to post on a blog that has, and once you switch over so you can do that you automatically move all your other blogs over, too! I'm pretty pissed. The number of times I've refrained from saying "fuck" in this post is actually pretty overwhelming.
I was really excited about the deep insightful post I was going to make tonight until I found out that I couldn't until I sold my soul to Google. Now I don't even care. There's really nothing to be done now, but I want it known that I'm angry.
...
...
But now that that's over with, I kind of want to talk about what I wanted to talk about before I got caught up in what I admit probably only made me angry because it caught me in a bad mood and delayed my talking about it in the only way available to me at 2 AM when no one's online.
I feel like I might be turning into a person I don't like here. I think maybe I'm turning into a self-obsessed jerk who talks about his girlfriend all the time but also wants every girl to like him, who can't accept a compliment graciously but takes offense at the smallest insult. I feel like when I'm genuinely nice people see it as fake, and when I get vehement during a discussion in class, for the sake of argument, they think I really care. I'm afraid there are people who see me in really negative ways, and I don't how that happened and I really don't like it.
I guess the question is, is this a perception thing, or have I really changed as a person? If I'm the same me but people are misjudging me, that's a bummer, but if some or all of these things are true and I'm changing for the worst, that's a tragedy. I reached a point in high school when I was finally happy with who I was and now I feel like that's slipping away, after I'd barely known it. My tower is falling. Jenga.

For liberty I uttered a prayer

ALMOST DONE WITH THE SEMESTER! ALMOST TIME TO GO HOME FOR CHRISTMAS! VICTORY LAP... kind of!

It has been a long time since I have posted. I know this, and I am sorry. As I explained to Michael in what he deemed to be like a talking head from The Office: This has been the semester of ass-kicking, and the name that has been taken is mine.
But I have now finished all of my papers and all but one of my tests, so things are looking up. In fact, I'm looking forward to a much better next semester. This is a dangerous thing to do, maybe, because I still have a job and Hanover is still hard and my roommate is still crazy. But... I can hope, right?

The only test I have left is a final for what, God willing, has been my last class actually in German, which is exciting. Although I will have to take another class with Dr. Randall, a woman who a) thinks the Holocaust did not happen and b) cannot teach to save her life. Every class we spend the first half of class going over the EXACT SAME THING we learned in the previous class. Meaning we're basically reading our notes for twenty minutes. Then we play a game she loves called "Guess the Magic Word." This is a game where we will be "discussing" a story, and she asks us a question and there is a certain word or perhaps phrase with which she wants us to answer. We could give every synonym of that word possible, and we could demonstrate that we understand the concept perfectly, but if we do not say that one, specific, magic word, we do not win, and she will keep saying, "No, you guys, you have to look deeper. You have to get beyond this." And if it goes on long enough she may try to convince us that we are all incredibly naive about life, politics in particular, but literature at the moment. It's really frustrating for me, especially, because I know that I know more about literature than she does. She tried to teach us that Kafka invented the first-person narrative, for God's sake! In 1911! Because it's not like that was the most popular form of the novel in the eighteenth century so that you could pretend it was a "true story" and not a novel, or anything. It's not like Jane Eyre ("Reader, I married him."), for example, was published in 1847. She keeps trying to get us to extract things from stories that are not there, which is the number one rule of Things Thou Shallt Not Do in literary analysis. You can tell I get really worked up about it. But the problem is that I can't express all of this in German; I can't express my understanding of the texts in German; the magic word is in German. My knowledge exceeds my vocabulary. It sucks. And her "teaching style," if you could call it that, sucks, and she didn't even let us fill out evaluations so that I could bitch about it in an official capacity. So you guys got to hear about it. Sorry.

The other day I was thinking: I can't shake the feeling today that if my life were an episode of The Office, I would be Pam. I feel very Pam today. My roommates keep being their ridiculous selves, and I feel like all I can do is be as understated as I can and shoot exasperated looks at The Camera That Is Not There. (If you've been watching The Office for long enough, somehow you always think the camera is there.)
I mean, one roommate is apathetic about everything except her boyfriend, in whose room she spends most of her time. I mean, like Eeyore apathetic. She knows this; she has no problem with it. Nor do I really, it just amuses me sometimes.
The other roommate has diagnosed depression and OCD, plus a brain cyst, but I think she may have manic episodes, too, because it sure as hell seems like it. Case in point, the other day. Roommate: "OHMYGOSH. Sam says we can do the recycling now instead of later. AREN'T YOU EXCITED?" Me: "That's... sure. Good." Roommate: "Come on! Get Kelly! Let's do it right now!" Me: "*sigh* Okay." Kelly was not in the room where she sent me to get Kelly. So I just stood there until she came out and I was like, "Kelly's not here," so she ran upstairs to get her in her immense recycling enthusiasm. Not understanding, at all, that it was not exciting, because doing the recyclying was going to take the same amount of time regardless of when we did it.
I end up being the normal person with the normal amount of enthusiasm an overwhelming amount of the time. And I get understated around this roommate especially because I feel the unconscious need to compensate.
Thus, I become Pam-like.
Roommate is the person who bursts into a room and makes a ridiculous announcement reminiscent of, (though never exactly this problem), "I burned my foot on a George Foreman grill!"
And I am Pam. "Please don't throw garbage at me."

I thought it about that time to tell everyone what's going on in Marten land. I would first like to say that if I had a country or kingdom or something, I wouldn't call it Marten land, because that sounds pretty lame. It would have to be something like Martencia, or Martopia, or maybe Martenasia. Anyway, the semester is coming to a close, and a bad one at that. My FYS professor probably hates me at this point because of a presentation I basically threw away for lack of materials (read: left my paper in my room, too lazy to go get it). He's not exactly god-like when it comes to running the class, anyway, the discussions are pretty hit-or-miss and he's never clear about his expectations for any of our assignments. I'm looking forward to never seeing him again when I get a real advisor for my major(s). Did I mention those? Theatre and Philosophy? Yeah, depending on whether or not I can get a ride to grad school, I'll probably be living in a box after college. Still room in yours, Erin? Also, my cell phone is missing. I think it was actually a decepticon spy that transformed into a phone to intercept important messages, and now it's got enough information to prepare a full-scale assault. Prepare for the worst, guys.
I read the archives of vgcats while doing my chinese homework yesterday. It's funny every once in a while, but it seems like some kid read penny arcade, and decided they could do it, too, only with anime-style cat people.
So Guys That Sing have official rehearsal times, now. Hopefully everyone will show up to them. We still technically need a name, but I'm calling us Guys That Sing until someone thinks of something better. Maybe Wombatica. Ryan thinks we could sing at Seattle's or something, and get money. Money would be cool, since I still lack a job. On music, the luckiest is coming along slowly, but surely, now that I have the sheet music. I'm also considering arranging various pieces of videogame music, including a pokemon medly.
Aside from Chinese, finals don't really worry me. The projects in Tech will be a pain, but I've got Sarah and Nate to help out with those. TWO MORE WEEKS!
